for Qualifying Colorado Students

If you’re a Colorado resident graduating from a Colorado high school, the Mines Golden Guarantee gives you a clear pathway to guaranteed admission at Colorado School of Mines.

Beginning with students entering Mines in Fall 2027, qualifying Colorado students who apply by the Nov. 1 priority application deadline and meet the academic requirements below will receive:

  • Guaranteed admission to Colorado School of Mines
  • A minimum $2,000 per year merit scholarship

The Mines Golden Guarantee is the first statewide, university-wide admission guarantee offered by a public R1 research institution in Colorado.

Do You Qualify for the Mines Golden Guarantee?

If you meet all Mines Golden Guarantee eligibility requirements and apply by Nov. 1, you’ll receive guaranteed admission to Colorado School of Mines. You’ll also receive a minimum $2,000 per year merit scholarship.

You must be:

  • A Colorado resident graduating from a Colorado high school
  • Applying to begin undergraduate studies at Mines in Fall 2027 or later

  • Submit your Mines application by the Nov. 1 priority application deadline.
  • Applying by the priority application deadline is nonbinding, so receiving an admission decision does not require you to commit to Mines. You’ll still have until May 1 to make your college decision.

  • Option 1: 3.8+ unweighted GPA
  • Option 2: 3.6+ unweighted GPA plus a minimum 1420 SAT or 32 ACT composite

The guaranteed admission criteria are a benchmark for guaranteed admission, not a barrier to admission.

Mines uses a comprehensive holistic review process for students who do not meet every Mines Golden Guarantee requirement. Our Admissions team considers your complete academic record and personal context, not just a single GPA, test score or course.

In fact, more than one third of Colorado students admitted to Mines for Fall 2026 did not meet at least one of the Mines Golden Guarantee benchmarks.

So if Mines feels like the right place for you, we strongly encourage you to apply.

You do not need to qualify for the Mines Golden Guarantee to be admitted to Mines.

    What is the Mines Golden Guarantee?

    The Mines Golden Guarantee is a guaranteed admission pathway for qualifying Colorado residents graduating from Colorado high schools (including homeschooled students), who apply by the Nov. 1 priority application deadline and meet all academic requirements will receive guaranteed undergraduate admission to Colorado School of Mines.

    Qualifying students will also receive a minimum $2,000 per year merit scholarship.

    Who is eligible for the Mines Golden Guarantee?

    The program is available to Colorado residents graduating from any Colorado high school (including homeschooled students), who are applying as a first-year student to begin undergraduate studies at Mines in Fall 2027 or later.

    Students must apply by our priority application deadline of Nov. 1 and meet the academic, coursework and performance requirements outlined on this page.

    What GPA do I need?

    You must meet one of the following:

    • An unweighted GPA of 3.8 or higher, or
    • An unweighted GPA of 3.6 or higher plus a minimum 1420 SAT or 32 ACT composite

    You must also meet the required math, science and course-performance criteria.

    What courses are required?

    Students must:

    • Complete pre-calculus or trigonometry at minimum
    • Complete three years of lab-based science
    • Include chemistry and/or physics in that science coursework
    • Earn no grade below a B- in any math or science course

    Both in-progress or completed coursework may be used to satisfy these requirements, provided the courses are successfully completed before enrollment.

    Do I have to submit an SAT or ACT score?

    Not necessarily.

    Students with an unweighted GPA of 3.8 or higher do not need an SAT or ACT score to meet the academic standing portion of the Mines Golden Guarantee.

    Students with an unweighted GPA between 3.6 and 3.79 must also have at least a 1420 SAT or 32 ACT composite to qualify for guaranteed admission.

    When do I need to apply?

    Your application must be submitted by the Nov. 1 priority application deadline.

    Applications submitted after Nov. 1 will still be considered for admission to Mines, but they will not be eligible for guaranteed admission through the Mines Golden Guarantee.

    Is applying by the Nov. 1 priority application deadline binding?

    No. Applying by the Nov. 1 priority application deadline at Mines is nonbinding.

    If you are admitted, you will still have until May 1 to decide whether to enroll.

    What scholarship comes with the Mines Golden Guarantee?

    Students admitted through the Mines Golden Guarantee will receive a minimum $2,000 per year merit scholarship.

    Additional scholarships may also be available depending on eligibility and separate scholarship requirements.

    What if I don’t meet all of the Mines Golden Guarantee requirements?

    You should still apply.

    The Golden Guarantee criteria determine eligibility for automatic admission, but they are not the minimum requirements for admission to Mines.

    Students who fall outside one or more of these benchmarks receive a comprehensive holistic review from the Mines Admissions team.

    For Fall 2026, more than one third of Colorado students admitted to Mines did not meet at least one of the Golden Guarantee benchmarks.

    If my GPA is below 3.8, can I still get into Mines?

    Yes.

    Students who do not qualify for guaranteed admission remain fully eligible for admission through Mines’ regular holistic review process.

    Admissions considers your complete academic and personal context when reviewing your application.

    If I meet the requirements, is admission truly guaranteed?

    Students who meet the published the Golden Guarantee requirements, apply by Nov. 1 and otherwise remain eligible for enrollment will receive guaranteed admission.

    Mines reserves the right to deny admission based on conduct concerns or other issues reported by a student’s high school or another prior institution.

    I attend a Mines partner high school. Does this replace my existing guaranteed admission pathway?

    No. Mines’ existing school and district partnerships will continue.

    Students at participating partner schools may qualify for additional benefits through those established pathways. The Mines Golden Guarantee expands guaranteed admission eligibility to qualified students graduating from high schools across Colorado.

    How do I know if I am considered a Colorado resident? Are ASSET students and other non-citizens eligible?

    Colorado residency is determined through a tuition classification process. All students graduating from a Colorado high school who receive the Resident tuition rate, including through ASSET, are eligible for the Mines Golden Guarantee. Students may be asked to complete a tuition classification form to confirm their eligibility for the program.     What if I’m homeschooled?

    Homeschooled students who are residents of Colorado who are applying as a first-year student to begin undergraduate studies at Mines in Fall 2027 or later qualify for the Mines Golden Guarantee, so long as they apply by our priority application deadline of Nov. 1 and meet the academic, coursework and performance requirements outlined on this page.
